YEF WHOLE STAFF TRAINING PART 2A & PART 2B
For YEF Intervention Schools
2A: Implementing a trauma and mental health informed approach, 1.5hrs

Staff will gain a deeper insight into creating psychologically safe classrooms and learn key skills and practical strategies to develop positive relationships with children and young people.
Practical application of PROTECT, RELATE, REGULATE and REFLECT within the classroom.
PROTECT: ways to create psychological safety and to develop a sense of belonging and connection
RELATE: practical ways to develop positive relationships; to hear the voices of young people and to use language to respond effectively to the needs of young people
- Effective ways to understand and respond to challenging and/or trauma-triggered behaviour.
- Practical application of Dan Hughes' relational model: PACE
REGULATE: practical ways to develop opportunities for regulation within the classroom and to increase pupils’ capacity to regulate
- Supporting young people to develop an understanding of, and language for emotion
- Understanding the impact of anxiety and fear on the capacity to learn
- Ways to support young people who are struggling to come to school
REFLECT: practical ways to support reflection through the curriculum
- Effective ways to support young people to make sense of their experiences and to develop a coherent narrative
- Restorative ways of responding to behaviours that challenge
- Developing self-awareness and reflection for staff: identifying hooks and triggers and understanding their impact on our interactions.
2B: Understanding the causes of violent behaviour in young people and how to help them heal, 1.5hrs
In this training, we will discuss the neuroscience and psychology of violence and how it is possible for a child to be programmed with an over-active RAGE system in their brain, as a result of their life experiences.
We will also discuss how this can be reversed, so that perpetrators can heal and no longer want to hurt and harm but move on to compassion for self and others. We will include inspiring models of healing violence in several parts of the world. We will then discuss the qualitative research with people who have been sentenced with GBH and/or murder who, during or after lengthy prison sentences, went through their own healing process.
Lastly, we will discuss what these experts, by lived experience, have to say about the help they so desperately needed and yearned for and didn’t get as children.
There will be an opportunity for discussion and reflection regarding how the content relates to your setting
Please note: This training contains some disturbing film footage.
